The High School Placement Test (HSPT®) evaluates both cognitive skills and basic academic skills:

Catholic high schools rely on HSPT scores to determine admissions eligibility and to place students into regular, honors, or advanced classes. A higher score opens doors to stronger academic opportunities.

HSPT® is a paper-based test and administered once a year at a set date by individual schools or school groups.

HSPT® evaluates basic math and computational skills. Where needed, you can easily solve the math problems faster using a piece of paper and pencil. Therefore, you may not use a calculator in the HSPT® tests.

Several months in advance contact the school where you plan to take the test. The schools are empowered to decide the accommodation requests.

The core segment does not separately test for science and social studies. Though there is an optional test for science and catholic religion. However, the optional tests are not included in calculating the composite score or national percentile ranking.

HSPT® is a multiple-choice test. Each question carries equal value. There are no penalties for incorrect responses or missed questions. The number of total correct responses is converted to standard scaled scores that ranges from 200 to 800. The individual student’s standard scores lend to the generation of the national percentile ranking, where 1 is the lowest and 99 is the highest.

In a typical year about 120,000 8^th graders take this test throughout the US.

You can take this test only once midway through your 8^th grade. Typically, South Florida high schools administer the HSPT^® on the first Saturday of December. You may not be able to take it twice, though some schools, at their discretion, may administer a make-up test. Check with the school of your choice of the admission policies.

HSPT^® being a placement test, individual schools determine the acceptable score range for their incoming students. High schools use the HSPT^® results as a reliable tool to evaluate the academic proficiency of an incoming first-year student and assign them to regular or honors programs.
